1 Narnala Fort



Narnala, also known as “Shahnur Fort”, is a hill fortress in Maharashtra, India, named after the Rajput Ruler Narnala Singh. The name Narnala was given after the Rajput Ruler Narnal Singh or Narnal Swami. The fort was built in 10 A.D. by Gond Kings. In 15th Century Mughals have occupied and rebuild the fort and hence it has been called Shahnoor Fort. Narnala was one of the thirteen sarkar of Berar Subah. Narnala consists of three small forts named Zafarabad fort (or Jafarabad) on the east, Narnala in the centre and Teliagarh on the west.


2 Narnala Wildlife Sanctuary




Narnala Wildlife Sanctuary, located few kilometres from Akola district in Maharashtra, is one of the famous wildlife sanctuaries in the country. The dense forest surrounding the ancient Narnala Fort was declared as the Narnala Wildlife Sanctuary on 2nd May 1997.Spread over an area of around 12 sq. km, this sanctuary is home to various species of fauna and flora. Ain, bamboo, dhawda, lendia, tiwas, salai, teak, sterculia and kusum are some of the flora species that can be found in Narnala Wildlife Sanctuary. Animal species, including sambhar, leopards, wild boars, barking deer, porcupines and serpents, can be spotted in the sanctuary.This sanctuary is managed by the forest authority and the Indian wildlife authority. The months from October to April are the best time to visit the sanctuary. Travellers can choose Akola Municipal Transport (AMT) or auto-rickshaws in order to reach this site.


3 Balapur Fort



Balapur Fort is located in Balapur which is a few kilometres from the destination, situated at the junction of Mhais River and Man River. The construction of the fort was started by Azam Shah, the son of Emperor Aurangzeb, in 1721 and was completed in 1757 by Ismail Khan, the Nawab.Since Balapur was an important military station during the Mughal period, this fort was constructed keeping in mind about the military position and responsibility. The entire fort is built of bricks and has huge walls along with three gateways, one within the other. For launching missiles, 3 m thick innermost walls have ramparts at different angles.While exploring this fort, tourists can find three wells and one mosque. Travellers can also witness the famous Bala Devi Temple located on the southern side of the fort. At present, the fort is used by the government to run some of its offices.


4 Akola Fort



Akola Fort, which is also known as Asadgad, is one of the famous tourist attractions in Akola. The fort was constructed in 1697 by Asad Khan, during the rule of Aurangzeb. In 1870, the fort was destroyed and ravaged by the British. The inscriptions of the walls of this fort suggest that it was constructed by different people. Tourists can explore the famous Temple of Lord Shiva located within the fort. This fort also houses the Rajeshwari Temple, which is visited by number of devotees.


5 Raj Rajeshwar Temple



Raj Rajeshwar Temple, which is dedicated to Lord Shiva, is visited by a number of devotees and tourists. According to Hindus, the Marathi month of Shravan is considered to be sacred. Therefore, devotees visit this temple to offer prayers at this temple to Lord Shiva during the Mondays of this month.
